  1. In law, a deed between two or more people.
  2. Historically, an indenture was a contract
  3. between a master and apprentice. The term
  4. derives from the practice of writing the
  5. agreement twice on paper or parchment and
  6. then cutting it with a jagged edge so that
  7. both pieces fit together, proving the
  8. authenticity of each half.
  9.
